- One 16-ounce can refried beans
- 1/2 Cup tomato salsa
- 1 Cup guacamole
- 1/3 Cup nonfat Greek-style yogurt
- 1/3 Cup shredded Jack or Cheddar cheese
- 2 Tablespoons chopped black olives
- 2 Tablespoons chopped green olives
In a 10- or 12-inch square platter, layer, in order: beans, olives, yogurt, salsa, cheese, and guacamole. Garnish with reserved olives, salsa, and cheese.
7 Layer Dip
What do all parties have in common? They're the perfect opportunity to make this dip. Not that you need an excuse to whip up this crowd favorite, which features seven layers of Mexican-inspired goodness, but, you know, just in case.
1 tablespoon taco seasoning
One 15-ounce can refried beans
One 4-ounce can green chiles
1¼ cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
Tortilla chips, as needed for serving
1. In a small bowl, mix the sour cream with the taco seasoning to combine.
2. In another small bowl, mix the beans with the chiles to combine.
3. In the base of an 8-by-4-inch casserole dish (or other small casserole dish, if you don't own this size), spread the beans in an even layer.
4. Spread an even layer of guacamole over the beans.
5. Spread an even layer of sour cream over the guacamole.
6. Spread an even layer of salsa over the sour cream.
7. Sprinkle an even layer of cheese over the salsa. Top with the tomatoes, then the scallions. Serve with tortilla chips.
Note: You can make this 7 layer dip up to 12 hours ahead and refrigerate it until ready to serve.

Best 7 Layer Taco Dip for Game Day
Are you ready for Game Day?! The big game has started, and we&rsquore all rooting for our teams, what better way to cheer them on at home than enjoying delicious snacks too? I made the Best 7 Layer Taco Dip for our party!
In my taco layer dip with ground beef, we used our homemade taco seasoning. You can make this Mexican layer dip to your liking even if you&rsquore meatless by skipping the meat.
We decorated in our favorite colors using streamers across the table. The tablecloth is a green tablecloth and if you wanted you could even do white streamers which would be fun! I cut them about 5 inches longer on both sides so I could tape under the table. It actually helped keep the tablecloth in place, not just the streamers.
I found some cute foam footballs that we&rsquore really enjoying for parties too. I just plop them onto the table and the guests love them! You can find this decor and more at Walmart. If you can&rsquot find the footballs, they&rsquore pretty easy to make with foam paper! I always use paper straws for parties too!
I put Pepsi&trade into the freezer before our guests arrived and if you plan it out well enough they will get a little slushie! This is due to the fact that the water content in them freezes, but the sugar part doesn&rsquot! Just make sure you don&rsquot leave them in too long or you&rsquoll have an exploded soda, no good!
We left them in there for about 2 and a half hours in zipped plastic bags to be safe. I like to open at least three of the cans to show our guests how handy the tab is! It&rsquos a great straw holder. 😉
I made a double batch of our dip. I can&rsquot get over is how good this dip is cold, even the meat. I make everything ahead of time and save them in the fridge with the lid on.
For the meat I use my Taco Seasoning Mix Recipe. Never buy those packets again, make it at home! 🙂
The dip was definitely the hit of our table, our guests kept telling me that it was the Best 7 Layer Taco Dip they&rsquove ever had! I put so much love and time into anything I make.
We made our homemade fresh guacamole recipe, homemade ground beef with corn and beans and really made sure it was the best it could be. It&rsquos already requested that I make it again this week by hubby! 😉
Classic 70s 7-Layer Mexican Dip
I adore this dip. In fact, I have been known to buy those itty bitty and pricey containers of it from the deli, just because I had a taste for it. I have loved this dip since the first time that I saw it being delivered to a party back in the late 70s. With Super Bowl coming up, I thought I would blog it, but really, I just wanted an excuse to make it.
Some people apply names to this fabulous dip, sometimes nice names like Tex-Mex Dip, sometimes names not so nice, but everybody knows it's just good ole old fashioned 7 Layer Dip from the 70s we've all known and loved. I don't know where 7 layer dip made its first public appearance or how, but I wanted to stay as true to it in its original glory, well, as best I could remember it anyway. Unfortunately, there have been so many twists and variations of it done over the years, that it's nearly impossible to recall the original classic version, but I've come as close as I can recall it being.
I do remember using refried beans with taco seasoning mixed in for the original dip, but these days I think a lot of folks use the canned bean dip from the chip aisle, and mix the seasoning in with the sour cream. The sour cream blend was pure white in my memory though, not pink. I also think a lot of people top the dip with the cheese layer, but I seem to remember the old way was having the tomatoes, green onion and olives in the starring roll on the upper deck with very finely shredded cheese peeking out underneath.
I should add here that there's no wrong way to do this dip - y'all know I'm all for making things your own - for this post, I'm just trying to get back to the classic 70s dip, as I remember it. But hey, I'm not getting any younger, so I could be wrong. I say make it the way you love it.
Amounts on everything are really just an educated guess, but seem to work. This is a small gathering serving size, done in a regular pie plate, but if you are making this for a party, I recommend doubling everything and using either a large serving platter or a 9 x 13 x 2 inch baking dish.
You'll need to dirty up a couple of bowls since you have to premix everything before layering it, but I'd venture to say it's worth the effort, because while some people like to make fun of this dip, it always results in a clean plate everywhere I have seen it. I'd say that's probably why 7 layer dip is still a party go-to, even after all these years.

Recipe: Classic 70s 7-Layer Mexican Dip
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 ( 10 ounce ) can refried beans
- 1 package taco seasoning
- 2 ripe avocados
- Juice half a lime
- Pinch kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper , or to taste
- 1 cup finely shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
- 1 medium tomato , cleaned, seeded and chopped
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives
- 1 large green onion , sliced
In a small bowl, blend the sour cream and mayonnaise together set aside. In another small microwave safe bowl, add the refried beans and warm for 1 minute, stir in the taco seasoning and mix well. Scoop out the avocados into another medium sized bowl, add the lime juice, salt and pepper and mash together using a potato masher.
Layer in a clear, glass pie plate as listed below, but leaving a small border around the edge for each layer, so that each layer shows on the outside. Layer in order as follows:
Layer 1 - Seasoned Refried Beans
Layer 2 - Avocado
Layer 3 - Sour Cream Mixture
Layer 4 - Finely Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Layer 5 - Chopped Fresh Tomatoes
Layer 6 - Sliced Black Olives
Layer 7 - Sliced Green Onion
Serve immediately with tortilla chips, or cover and keep refrigerated until the party. Doubles nicely for a 9 x 13 inch pan.
Serving Suggestion: Divide ingredients evenly in layers between individual glasses or clear plastic cups, approximately 10 ounce size or under.
Cook's Notes: If doubling, use three avocados. May also substitute guacamole dip for the fresh avocados, bean dip for the seasoned refried beans and lightly drained salsa or Rotel diced tomatoes for the fresh tomatoes.
Variations: Substitute cream cheese for the mayo. Omit refried beans and add a layer of cooked and crumbled ground beef on top of the cream cheese/sour cream layer. A layer of salsa may also be added if you don't have good fresh tomatoes.
